Everyone, your Prada backpacks and your Sketchers, because 10 Things I Hate About You celebrates your 25th anniversary today!

The 1999 film, starring Julia Stiles, Larisa Oleynik, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union and the late Heath Ledger, is one of several films from the 2000s that gave one of the Bard’s classics a more modern makeover. (to quote Mr. Morgan: “Now I know Shakespeare is a dead white man, but he knows his, so we can forget about that. “)The adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew is imaginative and faithful, adding its liveliness. the fashion of the moment.

The costumes of 10 Things illustrate the rift between the central sisters: Stiles’ mercurial Kat and Oleynik’s bubbly Bianca Stratford. While Bianca is completely in line with the ’90s aesthetic, from her butterfly t-shirt to her floral dress. Dressed in spaghetti straps, she’s also not afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion. Her two-piece prom dress (a more sensible pink taffeta boat neck with a ballet pink tulle skirt) is bold, even by 1999 standards.

But that doesn’t stop Kat from having flashy dresses. Big sister’s dark wardrobe emphasizes her dark and brooding personality, from her camouflage print tank top to her leather biker jacket. Although Kat spends most of the film cynical, the dress still managed to break up her difficult exterior and show her weakness with her vintage party dress: an indigo model with a matching shawl and pearl necklace.

Although the sisters were in the middle of the film, the clothing branch doesn’t fail anywhere. The girls’ most productive friends, Chastity (Union) and Mandella (Susan May Pratt) also offered stunning looks: Chastity represents Jean Paul Gaultier, while Mandella sports striking crochet pieces and lace-up boots. And of course, one of the most productive parts of reviewing our favorite videos of yesteryear is locating the cultural artifacts that have long since left the zeitgeist. Coming face-to-face with Bianca’s black flip-flops from Kat and Doc Marten is a surprise to the system.

So whether you’re interested in fabulous ’90s fashion or literary merit, 10 Things I Hate About You turns out to be a worthy classic, even after all those years.
