The good-looking trends of 2023 were all about creating an aesthetic. TikTok’s viral Strawberry Girl and Latte makeup turned food and drink lustful, while Barbiecore’s fashion and good looks fearlessly embraced bright colors (predominantly pink). Like I said, *aesthetic*.
Ahead of what is sure to be another year of glamorous trends, I tested several of this year’s most talked-about releases across the most prominent and attractive brands to see which ones lived up to expectations and deserve to be incorporated into their aesthetic in 2024.
With companies like Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics coming out with their very first mascara formulas and Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty and Halsey’s about-face dropping new eyeshadow sticks this year, there was sooo much to shop. But, since even girl math can’t justify splurging on every single product from every single line, I put the biggest drops to the test and pulled out a few standout products that you’ll want to bring into the new year.
Over the course of a few weeks, I tried eyeshadow sticks from Fenty Beauty, Rare Beauty, and makeup staples like concealer and foundation from Kylie Cosmetics and r. e. m. beauty and, of course, the viral TikTok products she noticed her FYP on: Fenty Beauty’s Adaptive Color Lipstick and Cheeks and Rhode’s Donut-Tinted Lip Glosses.
Below, locate the attractive brands and products that stood out this year:
Rihanna has launched new trendy Fenty Beauty novelties this year, adding new sun shades of Gloss Bombs and Cream Blushes, Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara and the December launch of Glitty Lid Shimmer Liquid Eyeliners, which can give your New Year’s Eve makeup a boost to a level. Rhode has packaged new peptide lip products this year, starting with a strawberry frosting flavor of the brand’s fan-favorite peptide lip remedy in August. However, Hailey Bieber’s most innovative release was the now-sold out Rhode Peptide Lip Tints release that necessarily blends her makeup and lip remedy into one product.
I’m a big fan of the monochromatic latte-style Toast color, but my absolute favorite is the limited-edition peptide lip tint in Jelly Bean, a soft pink color that has a bright touch and primary year 2000 vibes with its candy-inspired flavor.
Overall takeaway: I haven’t found lip tints to be as hydrating and long-lasting as the OG lip treatment formula, but when it comes to color cosmetics, they are very moisturizing and provide a sophisticated volumizing effect.
The rem. e. m. by Ariana Grande Beauty kicked off 2023 with several “Thank U, Next” collections in January, adding themed lip glosses and eyeshadow palettes.
However, the brand’s most highly anticipated release, the Sweetener Foundation, was my standout product from this year. Leaning into the skin care-foundation hybrid trend, the hyaluronic acid-infused formula provided very light coverage with a weightless texture and a natural-looking finish. I liked the broad range of shades and that the product makes your skin look like, well, skin, but someone with large pores or other skin imperfections might not like how light the coverage is.
Holiglitch’s Christmas collections were also a moment; They’ve joined TikTok’s viral frosted angel makeup trend. Pair Ari’s fan-favorite liquid eyeliner, At the Borderline Liquid Eyeliner, with a new chrome and cream lavender eyeshadow in Frostbyte. It’s soft but very shiny and I’ve used it for all my makeup looks for the holiday season.
Overall appreciation: Surprising. I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed the Sweetener Foundation. If you’re only going to buy one, r. e. m. ‘s smart-looking product, it’s a smart bet.
Kylie Jenner is the undisputed queen of lip products, and her cosmetics company made good on its promises this year with TikTok’s favorite tinted butter balms and matte lipsticks. The truth star also went back to basics for 2023 with the launch of an advanced new concealer, the brand’s matte liquid eyeshadow and first mascara.
The Kylash volume mascara, which comes in an aesthetically pleasing light pink tube, was the most expensive at $24, but I liked that it was lightweight, had lash-strengthening ingredients like grapeseed oil, and didn’t clump when I applied multiple coats. Create volume. While volumizing masks regularly leave deposits of black residue on my eyelids, I was glad I didn’t have this challenge after employing Kylash; I would have liked a slightly smaller wand and more duration on my lashes.
In my opinion, Kylie Cosmetics’ biggest success in 2023 was undoubtedly the Power Plush viral concealer, which I curiously liked a lot. It was creamy, buildable, and provided wonderful politics while remaining soft when I used it to hide dark circles and pimples. I wish the formula was dewister, but it gave my skin a retouched glow and looked wonderful in the photos.
Bottom line: Kylie Cosmetics has been dining this year with a bunch of wonderful new products, but Power Plush Concealer and Kylash Volume Mascara are the standout purchases.
Halsey’s vegan makeup line has been ambitious this year, launching a variety of high-gloss Cherry Pick lipsticks and eyeshadows. I tend to stay away from brightly colored lipsticks because of maintenance, but the lips had a consistency that component lip oil, lip balm component and at the same time provides the gloss and glossy pigment of a lipstick. It lasted for hours after applying it and the fruity flavor is a plus.
My favorite about-face makeup release this year were the dual-ended Smokesticks, which helped me seamlessly create the perfect smoky eye. The crease-proof formula features a creamy crayon on one end, and powder eyeshadow applicator on the other, helping you seamlessly blend and smoke out your eyes. Right now, I’m loving the orange-hued Stoke the Flames one, but I’m excited to try bolder options like the bright blue Dawn To Dusk hue for New Year’s Eve.
Overall appreciation: If you haven’t gotten past the best smoky eye yet, you’ll want some of those Smokesticks in your makeup collection.
I had high expectations for Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs 2023 releases after previously trying the Triclone Skin Tech Foundation. This year, the “Bad Romance” singer dropped an updated medium coverage version with fermented arnica, as well as a matching Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica.
After looking at the concealer, I was hooked and now it has become my favorite product in my bag. The lightweight formula gives skin a lovely glow without clumps or wrinkles, and blurs fine lines and dry areas that appear during the colder months. It’s also the GOAT to hide the buttons to the point that they’re there.
Another special feature of Haus Labs is the Sunstone color of the Bio-Radiant gel highlighter pressed with fermented arnica. I’ve tried it with a few friends and I swear this golden champagne highlighter is right for everyone, and I love that the formula is infused with skincare.
Overall review: Run, don’t walk, to get your hands on this concealer. You’re welcome.
Selena Gomez has been reserved and busy making plans for this year’s Rare Beauty releases, adding the viral Lip Soufflé Matte lip creams and a new logo line for frame care. Gomez tends to dominate with brightening products for the skin and cheeks, and the new Positive Light Under Eye Brightener, a more natural and lighter option than concealer, is no exception, blurring dryness and fine lines while maintaining a whole new look.
As someone who buys the brand’s liquid highlighters and blushes, my favorite versions of Rare Beauty 2023 were used unpredictably on my eyes and eyebrows. Perfect Strokes Longwear Gel Eyeliner
Another favorite, the Brow Harmony Precision Eyebrow Pencil, which Gomez introduced in the fall. The pencil seems more expensive than its $19 price tag, and I think the product is easy to use while providing pigmented yet herbal results. For all the women who are worried about overly ambitious eyebrows, this is the product for you.
Overall review: The brow pencil is underrated and pretty inexpensive, so definitely try it if you’re in the market for a new eyebrow product.
