For the first time, the Latin American fashion industry came together on Nov. 4 to celebrate local and diaspora talent in a three-day party marked by an awards rite held in the Dominican Republic.

The winners of 14 categories were announced Saturday night in a rite at Casa de Campo’s amphitheater. Among them, Luar through Raúl López for Brand of the Year, Willy Chavarría for Designer of the Year; and Karoline Vitto as Emerging Designer of the Year. There were a total of 1,500 entries for the awards, divided between 3 and six finalists depending on the category.

The awards have been in the works for 4 years, devised by her friends Constanza Etro, founder of the Milano Fashion Film Festival (where the two founders met for the first time) and Mexico Fashion Week, and Cuban-Nicaraguan designer and representative of the luxury logo Silvia Arguëllo. who has already won Vogue Italia’s “Who’s on Next” award and has worked with designers such as Giambattista Valli and Emanuel Ungaro. Etro was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lived in Mexico City before moving to Milan; Arguello is founded in the Dominican Republic.

“Today we are making history,” Arguëllo told the jurors gathered to vote on the second day. Chaired by Haider Ackermann, the jury included Italian designer Kean Etro [Constanza’s husband], fashion icon Anna Dello Russo, activist and actress Indya Moore, i-D’s global fashion director Carlos Nazario, Vogue Italia talent scout Sara Sozzani Maino, designer Margherita Missoni, Vogue Karla Martinez de Salas, editor-in-chief of Latin America and Mexico, Carlo Capasa, the president of the Camera Nazionale della Moda and Steven Kolb, general director of the CFDA (not all attended in person).
