TULSA – If you’re a music and Tulsa fan, you’ve probably heard of Cain’s ballroom.
Ancient music is known as “The House of Bob Wills”.
When visitors enter, there are several visual highlights of the place. The historic maple spring dance field of the ballrooms is one of the highlights, according to the venue’s website.
Decorating the walls are photographs of different musicians who’ve played the Cain’s, including Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Kay Star and Ernest Tubb. Above the dance floor, guests will find a silver disco ball inside a four-foot neon star lighting the dance floor.
But do you know the history of the music venue?
The historic music venue got its start as a garage for the cars of a Tulsa entrepreneur when it was first built in 1924, according to Wikipedia.
The contractor, W. Tate Brady, called the garage “The Louvre” and opened it to the public. The garage has a popular venue for evening meetings.
Six years later, in 1930, Madison W. Cain, known as “Daddy Cain,” bought the garage and turned it into a dance and collecting hall called Cain’s Dance Academy.
Papa Cain has hired jazz, country, blues and ragtime bands for the venue. In just two years, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys have had a Cain’s Dance Academy radio show on radio station KVOO.
Construction was closed in the late 1960s and, in 1972, was purchased through an 82-year-old Bob Wills fan, Marie Mayers.
Mayers opened Cain as a full-time dance runner with little success. Therefore, in 1976, he sent it to rock concert investor Larry Shaeffer.
Shaeffer focused on Ercun’s recovery in its design and elements, and opened in 1977 with a concert through Elvin Bishop.
In early 1978, Shaeffer hired the Sex Pistols, who paved the way for music reserves to be Erai’s biggest hit.
In 2010, Cain Ballroom ranked 26th worldwide in price ticket sales at a club through Pollstar.
In early 2020, LA Times named Cain’s Ballroom fourth on its list of options for live music.
