The historic Hollywood Chateau Marmont hotel, a celebrity favorite for decades, will have to be remodeled into a personal club reserved for members, its owner (Ian West/PA) said.

The historic Hollywood Chateau Marmont hotel, a celebrity-favorite hangout for decades, will become a personal club reserved for members, its owner said.

Andre Balazs told the Wall Street Journal that the coronavirus pandemic had accelerated existing plans and that conversion would take place until the end of the year.

The fitness crisis has led to a minimisation in the number of visitors, the owner said, adding that visitors to the concept would be comforted by the concept that they knew who was in and out at the hotel.

“There’s something to say to get to know people,” Balazs told the paper. “You can argue with them; you know where they’ve gone.

Built as an apartment building in 1927 and converted into a hotel in 1931, Chateau Marmont overlooks Los Angeles from its position on Sunset Boulevard and oozes the glamour of old Hollywood.

It is a favorite spot for celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Hunter S Thompson, James Dean and Howard Hughes.

The 63-room assets have given the impression on films, adding the 2016 musical La La Land and the 2018 edition of A Star Is Born.

Chateau Marmont has appeared on many songs, Lana Del Rey’s Off To The Races in 2011. The singer also tattooed the property call on her wrist.

While Chateau Marmont is synonymous with glamour for many, it has been the scene of a tragedy.

Comedian John Belushi died of a drug overdose at one of the hotel’s bungalows in 1982 at the age of 33.

Balazs owns the Chiltern Firehouse Hotel in London.
