(CBS DETROIT) — Detroit police said Monday they are still searching for a suspect who escaped custody at a hospital over the weekend.
Authorities are searching for 22-year-old Cortez Rabb, who was arrested on a felony warrant and a resistance and obstruction rating.
At a news conference Monday, Deputy Director Jacqueline Pritchett said Rabb was housed Sunday at the Detroit Detention Center when he was transferred to Henry Ford Hospital for treatment similar to a medical condition.
“Members of the Eighth District who were there during a previous arrest were told to take him to Henry Ford Hospital. . . He went to the bathroom and, as he was being carried back to the hospital, “The room to protect him is the room where he was able to run and run away from the officers and he was able to escape,” Pritchett said.
Detroit Police Chief James White said he was investigating the events leading up to the escape, adding a report that Rabb punched a police officer as he fled and policies to escort and secure prisoners.
He also said he believed Rabb posed a risk to anyone.
“We also believe that he knows our formula and knew that if he indicated that he had to go to the hospital, in accordance with our policy, we would make sure that he was given there. We’ll take a look at all of that,” he said.
Anyone should call 911.
“We’re going to track him down. It’s just going to take a little time. We want the help of the community,” White said.
