LONDON (AP) — Walt Disney Co says it’s “taking another approach” to its upcoming live-action remake of the animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” following complaints from actor Peter Dinklage.

In an interview on comedian Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast on Monday, Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia, said the selection of a Latina actress for the lead role was “progressive” but called the story, based on the fairy 19. Tale of the last century, “upside down”.

“Literally, no offense to anything, but I was a little surprised. . . They were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White; however, you continue to tell the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, ‘Game of Thrones’ and said the actor “Cyrano”.

“Take a step back and take a look at what he’s doing there. It doesn’t make sense. You’re progressive in a way. . . but are you still doing this damn story backwards about seven dwarves living together in a cave? What are you doing?” Man, have I done nothing to advance the cause from my rostrum?I guess I’m not strong enough.

The remake of Disney’s 1937 animated film, in which seven dwarf miners welcome an exiled princess through her evil mother-in-law, stars “West Side Story” actress Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Israeli actress Gal Gadot as the evil queen.

“To avoid reinforcing the stereotypes of the original animated film, we are taking another technique with those seven characters and have consulted with members of the dwarfism community,” a Disney spokesperson said Tuesday in an industry publication The Hollywood Reporter that was widely quoted in the media.

“We look forward to sharing more as the film goes into production after a long era of development. “

When reached for comment, a Disney representative referred Reuters to the statement.

The new Snow White movie will be released next year.
