Dwayne Johnson is now one of the XFL

The Rock is something new.

On Monday, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital announced that they had agreed to purchase the XFL. The football league, founded through WWE CEO Vince McMahon, was heading for a bankruptcy auction this week, but Johnson, Garcia and RedBird’s acquisition of XFL’s parent company Alpha Entertainment (for about $15 million) overthrew the process.

“The acquisition of XFL with my talented partners, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale, is for me a deeply rooted investment in two things: my love of gambling and my preference for caring for enthusiasts,” Johnson (who was one of WWE’s biggest stars and also played football for the University of Miami), said in a statement. “With pride and gratitude for everything I’ve built with my own hands, I plan to apply those calluses in the XFL, and look forward to creating something special for players, enthusiasts and everyone who cares about the love of football.”

The XFL was founded in 2018. The game started before this year but closed, with all live sports, through the coronavirus pandemic, which led the XFL to record its balance and go on sale in April.
