The Eurovision Song Contest is fast approaching and the week-long contest will be held in Liverpool.
Home to The Beatles and Cilla Black, the town of Scouse has a musical history.
Music and fashion go hand in hand, and Eurovision indeed will. On stage, we’re probably going to see all sorts of sartorial statements, from glamorous to slightly ridiculous.
Perhaps the contestants will be inspired by some of Liverpool’s musical icons for their costumes. . .
The Beatles
No list of Scouse musicians would be complete without The Beatles. The band’s music is incomparably influential, and John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr set trends.
Every era of his music had an aesthetic, from the elegant costumes of the early ’60s to the psychedelic fashion of the sergeant. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Black Cilla
With her cropped redhead and determination for Mod-style minidresses, Cilla Black – who burst onto the scene with the songs Any Who Had A Heart and You’re My World – was a pioneer of the ’60s.
She was not afraid to pass in opposition to the conference, as dressed in a red velvet minidress to get married in 1969.
Though less avant-garde in the decades that followed, Black remained sublime: She dressed in dresses on the red carpet, seemed committed to fine couture, and donned a blouse and pants-free coat on the 2008 runway.
Elvis Costello
Part of being a fashion icon is about having a defining look, and that’s all Elvis Costello perfected to perfection.
The Watching The Detectives singer was not born in Liverpool, but claimed the city after living there for a few years as a teenager. Costello is known to be an ardent supporter of Liverpool FC.
Costello debuted his signature style of oversized glasses in the canopy of his debut album, 1977’s My Aim Is True, and this continued throughout his career, involving a felt hat.
Mel C
As Sporty Spice, Melanie Chisholm, better known as Mel C, was not originally regarded as the fashionable woman in the women’s group. However, his commitment to sportswear is prescient, long before the sportswear trend became widespread.
These days, Chisholm is at the forefront of the trend by combining sportswear in her outfits, while pairing things with more adult couture accents and more glamorous looks.
Atomic kitten
With low-waisted pants, short blouses, butterfly prints and blue sunglasses, Atomic Kitten’s fashion is the epitome of 2000s fashion, regardless of the mix of Kerry Katona, Liz McClarnon, Jenny Frost and Natasha Hamilton in the range.
The band’s fashion fulfilled just about every 2000s taste you can believe in: with big highlights in their hair, shipping pants, miniskirts, shawl belts, flat caps, corsets and more. And with the resurgence of Y2K fashion, you can now check out the trends Atomic Kitten champions on Instagram and TikTok.
Rebecca Fergusson
Propelled to fame in 2010 by The X Factor, Liverpudlian soul singer Rebecca Ferguson will play a role in this year’s Eurovision.
He will perform alongside Rita Ora in the Liverpool ACC semi-final.
In terms of fashion, Ferguson is a lover of incredibly glamorous dresses, with sparkles and highlights like capes.
Her love for dramatic dresses was demonstrated last year when she married Jonny Hughes in a sparkling princess-style dress with a tiara and a long veil.
