Facebook whistleblowers say the tech giant ignored racial prejudice studies in mid-2019 on Instagram’s automatic elimination formula and told workers to keep the effects secret.
In mid-2019, Facebook’s Instagram researchers discovered that accounts claiming to belong to a black user were 50% more likely to have their accounts disabled through the new moderation formula than whites.
The new system, designed to eliminate problematic and bullying accounts, incorporated the photo sharing app in 2019.
The revelation, made to NBC News, came from two current and one former staffers.
