At least four other people were killed and dozens more were seriously injured after an exercise accident in southern Germany today.
The exercise to Munich derailed around 12:15 p. m. in Burgrain, near the ski hotel Garmisch-Partenkirchen, said.
Footage from the scene shows two-story cars crumpled on the side with debris strewn across the tracks as passengers emerge from damaged windows with their suitcases.
Rescuers are still struggling to locate survivors at the carnage, and firefighters were forced to cut down trees to reach the wreckage.
“People are being pulled out of the windows,” a BILD police spokesman said.
He said “all age groups” were seriously injured.
Authorities showed that at least four other people were killed and that there were 60 passengers on board at the time of the derailment.
Another 30 people were injured, and 15 were taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Stefan Sonntag of the Upper Bavarian police said the exercise was “very crowded and many other people were, hence the higher number of injured. “
Many schoolchildren are believed to have travelled after the end of Friday’s holiday.
The cause of the derailment is not clarified without delay, but prosecutors and police opened an investigation, police said.
The mountain hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and its surrounding regions will lately host the G7 summit of world leaders later this month.
From June 26 to 28, the heads of state and government, US President Joe Biden, will meet at Elmau Castle, about 11 kilometers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Policemen and infantrymen who had been deployed to protect the site before the summit have now been kidnapped to help with the rescue operation.
Three helicopters from the Austrian region of Tyrol reportedly rushed to the scene.
A U. S. soldier who witnessed the crash from a nearby road said the scene was “just horrific. “
He told the Garmisch Partenkirchner Tagblatt: “It’s terrible. Just horrible. Suddenly, the exercise was overturned. “
An elderly passenger who survived the crash after rescuers smashed a window and dragged him out said, “There was a lot of noise and then dust. “
One firefighter described the scene of the crash as “brutal. “
Part of the direction between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen has now been blocked and diverted, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said.
Regional trains have noticed an increase in passenger numbers since June 1, when an economy ticket to travel to Germany went into effect.
Germany’s deadliest rail accident occurred in 1998 when a high-speed exercise operated through state-owned Deutsche Bahn derailed in Eschede, Lower Saxony, killing people.
The last recent fatal twist of fate occurred on February 14 this year when one user was killed and 14 others were injured in a fate twist between two local trains near Munich.
In 2017, a collision between a passenger exercise and a desk cargo exercise near the western city of Düsseldorf injured 41 people.
