The carillon on the tower of the New Town Hall represents two moments in the history of the city of Munich:
First, the wedding of Duke William V and René of Lorraine, held in February 1568. In honor of the bride and groom, a jousting tournament was held at Marienplatz. The Bavarian knight triumphed over his opponent from Lorraine.
After a severe plague epidemic, it is said that coopers were the first to return to the streets to dance and entertain the plague-stricken population.
The Glockenspiel (a carillon) offers a year-round program that attracts tourists and locals alike. Check out the main points below:
