Say goodbye to square grids: Instagram’s new look is here.
If you’ve noticed something slightly off with your Instagram algorithm, but couldn’t quite put your finger on it, well, you’re not alone. Recently, the app made yet another major divisive change to how users view images posted on the platform.
Meta, the developing company who own the app, have switched images from a square format to a portrait, meaning our perfect square grids are now a thing of the past. And so are those carefully curated grids by some of your favourite celebrities. But what spurred the change? Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram revealed that the update was made to make uploading images easier for users, ‘Squares are from way back in the day when you can only upload square photos to Instagram…The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical.

“There are 4 of 3 to 3 in a photo or nine of 16 in a video, and posting it on Square is brutal. So I hope we can find a way to manage this transition.
In addition to this, users will also have the option to edit their grid through the option precisely what order they need to show their photographs.
While we’ll have to begrudgingly admit that the update will make the process of posting to Instagram far easier than ever before, many users have been left feeling that their years of curating and editing their pictures to fit the square image requirements have been in vain, and that the update has messed up their grids, including some of favourite celebrities.
Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are among the many A-listers whose Instagram feeds have been affected by the edit.
Another celebrity whose grid used to be perfectly aligned is no longer Niall Horan, and surely fans are not happy, given their answers on social networks.
As for what is followed online for Instagram updates, Mosseri has detailed that our outstanding history can also download a slightly younger cure in the near future: “We are also looking to move the most prominent aspects in the grid and add them as A tab.
