TITANIC director James Cameron has denied claims that he is making a film about the tragic OceanGate submersible accident.
“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media, but I want them now. I’m NOT talking about an OceanGate movie, and I never will,” the AVATAR director tweeted.
OceanGate’s submersible Titan imploded earlier this summer while diving to see the wreckage of the Titanic. The ship’s crew, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood, all died in the crash.
Cameron may not be making a movie about the accident, but the director, who made 33 trips to see the wreckage of the Titanic, shared his take on what happened to OceanGate.
“I am very suspicious of the generation they were using. I wouldn’t have ridden that submarine,” he said, adding that he and other members of the deep-diving network had written a letter to OceanGate saying they believed the company was heading for a “catastrophe. “
Movieguide® reported Cameron’s comments:
Following the accident, OceanGate announced it would postpone “all exploration and publicity operations” and got rid of all social media pages.
Movieguide® reported in the past on Discovery Channel’s Josh Gates’ resolution to turn down the opportunity to make a stop at the wreckage of the Titanic with OceanGate.
Discovery Channel explorer Josh Gates has revealed why he refused the Titanic sink with OceanGate.
“I had the exclusive opportunity to dive the OceanGate Titan submarine with [company CEO] Stockton [Rush] at the helm in preparation for his first project on the Titanic,” he shared. “For those who ask, Titan did not perform well on my dive. . . “
Gates continued, “In the end, I walked away from a great opportunity to film Titanic because of my protection issues with the OceanGate platform. There’s more to Titan’s history and design that hasn’t been made public, much of that is troubling.
