Joaquin Phoenix
“Beau Is Afraid” officially opened in theaters across the country this weekend, meaning anyone wishing to be traumatized by Ari Aster’s new descent into madness is free to do so. Critics have praised the film for its ambitious vision and refusal to intervene. it’s a representation of anxiety, and many have it as one of the highlights of Aster’s career so far. But if there’s one thing fans and detractors of the film can agree on, it’s that it’s not for the faint of heart. Joaquin Phoenix knows itbigger than anyone, so he took it upon himself to warn his enthusiasts what not to do when they see him.
In a new interview with Fandango, Phoenix implored the audience to take care of their own sanity while watching the film. The prominent and intense actor said he didn’t think anyone deserved to take hallucinogens before watching the movie; He joked that it would be perversely curious to see the effects if someone was nutty enough to do so.
“Someone at school told me there was a thread from school with friends, a challenge they were going through to take mushrooms and move on to see this movie,” Phoenix said. “And I just wanted to do a PSA and say don’t take mushrooms and stop by to see this fucking movie. . . But if you do, shoot yourself. But no!”
Phoenix added that even after watching the film for months and seeing how all the scariest scenes were filmed, he found himself viscerally concerned while watching the finished product.
“I was definitely squirming in my seat. First of all, I was laughing at the whole damn movie,” he said. “There are some sequences where I squirmed, I mean, things that [Ari] did with sound design. “, it was great. It’s such a rich world and there are so many main points to see. It’s 100% a movie you feel. There are so many rich and complex themes in this film, but it’s such a visceral delight to watch. Then you leave, and when that feeling fades, you start thinking about it.
