Major Retailer Faces Backlash Over Plus-Size Clothing Options

A clothing store with 165 outlets across the country has come under fire for what some social media users are calling a recall of its plus-size clothing options.

Forever 21, like many of the outlets that once dominated malls, has had its fair share of struggles in recent years. The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2019 to be acquired in 2020.

The company that kept the logo is a combination of a company called Authentic Brands Group and two real estate companies that NPR reported as “the largest mall operators in the United States. “

The startup would later partner with online fashion retailer Shein in hopes of revitalizing and expanding Forever 21.

Modern Retail announced just two years ago that the organization expected to open 14 more stores, with a new address.

“Part of Forever 21’s comeback strategy is to open smaller but larger retail outlets, a stark contrast to the sprawling Forever 21 locations of the 2000s and 2010s,” Modern Retail said in its report.

The backlash against the clothing store has intensified in recent weeks following social media posts from frustrated shoppers claiming that Forever 21 was pulling its plus-size offerings.

“Forever 21 doesn’t care about plus sizes,” TikTok user Samyra told viewers. “And how do I know? I went to five other places here in Los Angeles and guess how many of them had plus sizes in store?”

She is then shown asking store workers where she can leave her long clothes. Many of them point elsewhere.

Other videos imply that Forever 21 recently closed its Instagram committed to its plus-size clothing customers.

Forever 21 claims, however, that this decision has nothing to do with the exit of plus-size clothing from the market. Instead, the chain was looking to consolidate all of its social media accounts into a single Forever 21 account.

“Our purpose is to create an inclusive area where everyone feels at home, regardless of size, gender or race,” Forever 21 shared on Instagram earlier this week. “We have not eliminated Plus or any other product category; in fact, we have expanded our offering to categories such as lingerie, sleepwear, active activities and swimming. “

Forever 21 went on to say that it is contemplating expanding its plus-size offerings.   Until Tuesday, a link to the retailer’s “Plus Curve” was still featured prominently when visiting Forever21. com.
