Tamar Bucci, a police officer who worked for the Massachusetts State Police, has died. He was 34 years old.
The branch said Bucci’s death Friday in a message on social media after she was hit by a vehicle while helping another motorist Thursday night.
“Private Tamar Bucci gave her life in the line of duty last night when her patrol car crashed into a tanker while seeking to drive and help a disabled motorist,” the organization wrote alongside a photo of the defeated officer.
“We are heartbroken by his loss,” the Massachusetts State Police continued on its Twitter account.
In a follow-up tweet, the branch added: “Private Bucci, 34, assigned to Medford Barracks. There is no greater love for one user than to give one’s life for another. “

Around 11:45 p. m local time Thursday, Bucci saw a damaged car near the side of the road and tried to provide help, State Police Col. Christopher Mason told MassLive.
Bucci had turned on the lights of his police car at the time the vehicle collided, Mason said. When the patrol struck, it went off the road, he added.
Bucci’s vehicle collided with a tanker truck carrying about 10,000 gallons of fuel, WCVB reported.

Two other people close to them saw the incident and pulled Bucci from the scene, before a nearby Stoneham officer practiced CPR, the media outlet added. Bucci was then taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, but was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the driver of the tanker truck was not injured and is running with police, while the user of the Bucci vehicle stopped for help and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to WCVB.
A Massachusetts state police officer did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Bucci graduated in the past from the State Police Academy in 2020, the Boston Globe reported, mentioning Mason.
Before applying for law enforcement, Bucci had worked as a security guard at a casino, the outlet added.
“There is no greater sacrifice than to give one’s life in the service of others. Private Tamar Bucci played the Massachusetts State Police, and his loss is devastating to his loved ones, the Commonwealth and his brothers in blue,” the governor said. . Charlie Baker wrote on Twitter.
“Our honest and honest mind is with Private Bucci’s circle of relatives at this heartbreaking time,” he continued, adding that flags would fly at half-mast on all state buildings honoring Bucci.
The defeated officer is survived by her parents, two sisters, a half-brother and a half-sister, according to NBC Boston.
