Matt Schaefer, a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives, has asked the state attorney to investigate.
Schaefer announced his plans on Twitter amid calls to “cancel Netflix,” which has begun appearing on the site.
“I asked Texas Attorney General Paxton to investigate the film @netflix Cuties for imaginable violations of child exploitation and child pornography laws. CUTIES #txlege,” he tweeted.
Since then, the broadcast has apologized for the “inappropriate” marketing of the film.
“We deeply regret the art regardless of the point we’ve used for Cuties/Cuties,” Netflix said in a statement. “It wasn’t right, nor was it representative of this French film that won an award at Sundance. Now we have the photos and description updated. “
The film about the age of majority written and directed by the Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Ma’mouna Doucouré and follows a young woman from a classic circle of Senegalese Muslim relatives who join a dance group.
Doucouré said his paintings have been misunderstood, and told Refinery 29, “Cuties is a mirror of our society, and I hope we can all look at each other and the paintings in combination to create a bigger world. Imagine if all this faithful power blindly criticizing my film could be used to protect those in need and offer new models. “
She also told Time, “This film seeks to show that our young people have time to be young, and that adults protect their innocence and keep them blameless for as long as possible. “
Netflix further developed the Doucouré point, telling Variety: “Cuties is a social commentary that opposes the sexualization of young children. It’s an award-winning film and a tough story about the strain on young women on social media and developing society in general, and they inspire us interested in those vital problems to see the film. “
Other lawmakers who voted against Cuties come with Republican candidates for the U. S. House of Commons in California James P. Bradley and Buzz Patterson.
Bradley tweeted: “If you look at 11-year-olds, you’re a pervert. If you ask 11-year-olds to touch each other in front of the camera, you’re a pedophile. If you are creating and distributing #Cuties on Netflix, you “related to the activation of abuse. • CancelNetflix”.
While Patterson added: “Our elected officials are incredibly quiet about the Netflix film Cuties. Even those running for office, supported by the highest-ranking members of the two status quo parties, are silent. I’ll never keep my mouth shut, why run alone to be quiet?#CancelNetflix and its board members. “
