Ally Moreo and Matthew Gutierrez met when they were journalism students. It was a cross-country road vacation she knew she was looking for to marry him.

Alexandra Paige Moreo and Matthew Alexander Gutierrez had their first date in April 2017, when they were sophomores at Syracuse University. But they had already had plenty of “unofficial appointments,” as they call them now, as they ran together for the student newspaper.

Or they covered sports for the Daily Orange, where Mr. Gutierrez was a journalist and editor, and Ms. Moreo was a photographer and photo editor. On long trips to the games, they got to know each other, first as colleagues and friends. At some point, Moreo became more interested.

“I thought he was handsome,” said Ms. Moreo, 27, who is taking Ally’s call. “He’s got those radiant blue eyes. “

On reporting trips, there was a third user in the car with them. “I think one in three people knew they enjoyed Matthew,” Ms. Moreo said. However, “I don’t think Matthew knew I was interested in Matthew. “

When a mutual friend told Mr. Gutierrez how Ms. Moreo was feeling, he began texting her more often. After covering the morning workouts of the Syracuse football team, they had breakfast together and chatted before class. They had their first official date at Pastabilities, a place to eat in Syracuse.

“It was a very fluid conversation,” said Gutierrez, also 27. “There is no shame and no one seeks to impress anyone. “
