Last year’s “Evil Dead Rise” is not only one of the most productive horror videos of 2023, but also one of the most productive the genre has noticed in several years. This supernatural and bloody adventure has just arrived on Prime Video and you want to check it out.
It might seem that a horror movie is “funny”, but “Evil Dead Rise” doesn’t particularly care about provoking nightmares in its viewers, instead changing the scare to focus on deliciously disjointed sensations. In addition, there is consistent blood with bucket.
The “Evil Dead” series has a remarkable consistency in an era where horror sequels can be pretty terrible. “Evil Dead Rise” may be the group’s. That’s no small feat when 1987’s “Evil Dead II” is among the heavyweights of the genre. So let’s take a look at what makes “Evil Dead Rise” such a devilishly fun watch.
Functioning as a standalone access to the horror series with only minor connective tissue to the ’80s original, “Evil Dead Rise” is an epic update to the franchise. Take the action away from a secluded cabin in the woods and take up position in an apartment complex in Los Angeles.
After a spooky opening, concluding one of my favorite calling cards in film history, the audience turns to Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland). These two separated sisters are polar opposites but they meet again when the former discovers that she is pregnant. and he has nowhere to go. But this meeting of the circle of relatives is temporarily interrupted.
Evil lurks around the corner, and when an earthquake reveals a hidden underground chamber hiding a sinister e-book known as Naturom Demonto, one of Ellie’s teens summons a demonic presence. What follows is a war for survival against a bloodthirsty creature full of flesh.
If I haven’t said it clearly enough, I’ll put it bluntly: “Evil Dead Rise” is a gore festival in general. Of course, this is to be expected when it comes to the “Evil Dead” series, but it is so. It’s important to note that this horror movie is rarely very suitable for the faint-hearted. If you can’t take care of your blood, guts, and viscera, I advise you to skip this one.
But for those who don’t mind seeing rivers of (fake) gooey blood, “Evil Dead Rise” is an incredibly funny horror movie. He’s also very creative, artfully claustrophobic vibe of his department with increasingly creative tactics and providing just enough emotional risks for you to genuinely care about his main characters. Lily Sullivan in particular is a true champion and transforms Beth into a gold-level “last girl”.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see that “Evil Dead Rise” takes on some narrative hazards that I hadn’t noticed. I watch a lot of videos, and a lot of horror videos in particular, and it’s rare that the genre surprises me. days, but “Evil Dead Rise” is going in a direction I hadn’t anticipated. I probably wouldn’t say more to avoid spoilers, but it’s not predictable.
I’m not the only one who is inspired by “Evil Dead Rise”. The 2023 film lately has a score of 84% on the overall review site Rotten Tomatoes, which is enough to earn it a Certified Fresh seal of approval. Its viewership score of 76% is also solid, especially when you consider that horror tends to decline with viewership because the genre is so controversial.
If you’re looking for something new to watch on Prime Video this week, I invite you to give “Evil Dead Rise” a try. Whenever you can take care of some pretty excessive blood, enjoy some overly funny horror. A film that is rarely very afraid of taking narrative risks.
