Real-time deepfake generation is going viral, fueling fears of identity fraud

In recent days, a new piece of software called Deep-Live-Cam has made waves on social media, attracting attention for its ability to create deepfakes in real-time with incredible ease. The software takes a single photo of a user and applies their forehead to a live webcam feed, tracking the user’s pose, lighting, and expressions on the webcam. Even if the effects are perfect, the immediate advances in generation underscore how less difficult it has become to fool others thanks to AI.

The Deep-Live-Cam project has been in progress since late last year, but it recently gained viral attention after videos of patterns began circulating online. These clips show Americans imitating personalities such as Elon Musk and George Clooney in real time.

The sudden surge in popularity briefly prompted the assignment of open source to the most sensible of GitHub’s trending repositories list. The free software is available on GitHub, making it available to anyone with basic programming knowledge.
