Lindsay Lohan has become the queen of Netflix films. She’s also the queen of new Christmas movies in 2024. The erstwhile child star has the No. 1 new holiday film of the season, and it’s not even close.
It’s Our Little Secret surpasses the films starring Lacey Chabert, the Hallmark classic that has a new Netflix movie, and the comedian Jack Black, whose funny Christmas movie was scored for Paramount+.
That’s according to data provided by Samba TV, a provider of TV technology for audience data and omniscreen measurement. Its breakdown of the top 10 new streaming Christmas films, measured from November 1 to December 10, puts Secret squarely at the top.
The film attracted 3,293,332 American families in this period. By comparison, the No. 2 new Christmas movie, Chabert’s Hot Frosty, also on Netflix, drew 2,332,865 viewers in the same period.
Our Little Secret may be Lohan’s most productive film on Netflix, where she signed a multi-picture deal. Its previous holiday effort, Falling for Christmas, attracted 989,000 families two years ago, even if that was measured in a smaller window.
Last spring’s Irish Wish movie about St. Patrick’s Day recorded very similar numbers. Obviously, other people get used to looking for Lohan during the holidays. And the streaming service has benefited from the semi-annual exposure around Lohan’s return after years in which her private life made more headlines than her professional achievements.
In Our Little Secret, Lohan and an ex unknowingly end up dating siblings, setting them up for an unforeseen reunion over the holidays, leading to an equally unforeseen resurgence (for them, for viewers) of their romantic feelings.
Netflix has the flagship streaming channel. Like this latter cable network known for its older but wildly popular Christmas stories, Netflix made a major investment in the genre and it paid off.
The service boasts six of the top seven new Christmas movies of the year. Behind Our Little Secret and Hot Frosty, in which Chabert matches with a hot snowman who comes to life, Netflix’s Meet Me Next Christmas (2,052,469 households) and The Merry Gentlemen (1,959,697) rank No. 3 and 4.
Meet Me Next Christmas features another Netflix holiday romantic comedy stalwart, Christina Milian, as a woman searching for tickets to a sold-out Pentatonix concert and falling in love with her adventure through New York City.
The Merry Gentlemen is an unapologetic opportunity to convince former teen idol Chad Michael Murray to take off his shirt, and it works. He and some men agree to host a men’s Christmas revue to raise money for a failing bar and, yes, have sex with the bar owners’ daughter.
Paramount only has one new Christmas movie in the top 10, but it’s a counterfeit entry. At No. 5, Jack Black’s sweet and funny Dear Santa features a boy who summons Satan (Black) while needing to write a letter to Santa. The film registered 1,494,283 households.
