Top 10 Most Popular Netflix Movies in 2024

Since Netflix compiled its Top 10 list in February 2020, I’ve kept a spreadsheet that tracks the position of movies in the United States over the days. It is desirable to see which films have lasted the longest, with the most sensible ones on the list being more than any other. There have been some wonderful, standout moments over the years, from Red Notice to The Mitchells vs. The Machines, from Don’t Look Up to Glass Onion, from The Adam Project to Spenser Confidential. And 2024 has also seen its share of dominant films, some of which are among the best performances ever in Netflix’s Top 10. So which movies dominated the most this year?

Fortunately, since I follow each of the movies on Netflix’s Top 10 list every day, I’ve maintained a scoring formula that ranks movies based on their performance. The calculation is simple: a first position is worth ten points, a second position is worth nine points, up to the tenth position which is worth one point. Although Netflix provides figures for many movies on viewership and hours watched, I think my approach offers some advantages. Several films will climb the charts by being dominant for a short period of time, while others will suffer and remain consistently relevant, two points that are not necessarily reflected in Netflix’s weekly report. In fact, I think my approach allows us to better perceive which films have ruled the zeitgeist throughout an entire season. So I would like to talk about those findings here in this article.

What follows are the 25 movies that have gotten the most points as of Dec. 14, 2024 (I’ll update this article if any new movies make the list before the end of the year). You’ll notice a runaway winner at the top of the list, followed by what looks like a more normal year of competition:

As with most years, this list is largely animated-driven. Starting with what has become the best-performing Netflix movie of all time, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, whose score of 1,145 numbers at most doubles that of Shrek, which is in second place, with 632 numbers. While the film premiered on Netflix in December 2023, the film’s dominance in the Top 10 continued through 2024, as the Super Mario Bros. movie has appeared on the list 249 times this year (277 total if you count last year). In total, it almost tripled the second-highest number of appearances in this year’s Top 10, which belonged to the Minions with 89.

Other big animated films were Trolls Band Together, which appeared in the Top 10 71 times in total, Shrek, which made the list 84 times out of a total of 132 times in 2024, and Sing, which had the second best streak. of the year with 56 consecutive days on the charts (only the Super Mario Bros. movie’s 122-day streak). Other notable titles were The Secret Life of Pets, which charted 38 times this year, and Home, which landed 31 days of its total of 117 days in 2024.

As a parent, it makes sense to me that animation dominates the Top 10, since kids like to watch the same videos over and over again. So let’s see how these 25 most sensible ones would evolve if we excluded animation:

As you can see, the general points are getting closer. Rebel Ridge is the only non-animated film to have a streak of 25 consecutive days in the Top 10 (it was on the charts for a total of 26 days) and had a streak of 8 consecutive days in the top spot. Then there’s Damsel, which might have been the most-watched non-animated film on Netflix in 2024 in terms of hours watched, but which didn’t necessarily dominate the most sensible spots in the Top 10 like Rebel did. The other big winner, The Union, tied with two other films, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Hit Man, for the longest streaks in first position with 10 consecutive days.

Several of Netflix’s big winners this year weren’t produced by the streamer, with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Madame Web and The Equalizer 3 all being part of the top seven spots. Interestingly, those movies didn’t spend as much time in the #1 position as movies like Anyone But You, The Little Things and Irish Wish, but spent more time on the charts overall, making the Top 10 list 23 times, 20 times and 19 times respectively.

You’ll notice that Atlas doesn’t appear on this list, which is unexpected given that it’s technically the third-most-watched movie on Netflix in 2024 in terms of total hours viewed. However, despite starting her Netflix run with nine consecutive days on the charts, Jennifer Lopez’s sci-fi vehicle fell out of the Top 10 after just twelve days. So while technically the movie may have been viewed more, it wasn’t announced on Netflix’s Top 10 list for a while. Rebel RidgeArray At the moment, Atlas’ total of 105 issues slightly ranks the 50 most sensible movies of the year. .

Compared to other years, 2024 is an up-and-down year for Netflix’s Top 10. In fact, it’s a positive year for animation, as movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Shrek, Minions, and The Boss Baby spent more time in graphics. than animation in recent years and, as a result, they are all lately among the Top 10’s most sensible lifetime performances.

However, this is not the case with non-animated films. For example, Rebel Ridge’s most productive performance of 215 numbers slightly surpasses the 25 most productive performances of a lifetime, surpassing other films such as You People and The Unforgivable. However, if we exclude the animated films, Rebel Ridge comes in at number 15. Still, over the years we have noticed that their most productive non-animated films do much better, such as the 355-issue Red Notice, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story the 340 issues and Don’t Look Up the 335 issues. Simply put, no movie in 2024 has dominated the Top 10 for as many days as those giants.

Like I said, I’ll continue to update this list as the year comes to a close. Currently, the only other major movie moving up the charts is Our Little Secret, which lately has 136 numbers and ranks 17th among non-animated movies. But for now, this turns out to be a transparent review of the movies that made the maximum impression on Netflix’s Top 10 list in the year 2024.

As you can see, Carry-On rose to fifth position thanks to its historic year-end release, although it would go on to earn more Top 10 numbers than any other film released in 2024 on Netflix. Array and Our Little Secret slowly racked up two hundred numbers during their 33 days of airing (the most Top 10 screenings of any non-animated film in 2024).
