Top Critics Name Worst Movies Of 2024

Critics have made their picks for the worst videos of 2024, which come with movies starring Chris Pine, Dennis Quaid, Zack Snyder and even Mickey Mouse.

While Hollywood has given enthusiasts plenty of reasons to rejoice with critical successes such as Inside Out 2, Deadpool

Some of the films that met the ire of critics were big-budget films, while others were independent films that featured the work of A-list stars.

Below are some of the critical videos among their “worst” lists of 2024.

Variety film critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge each had a list of what would be the five worst films released in theaters in 2024.

Gleiberman’s selection for the fifth worst film of the year, Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams, daughter of film icon Robin Williams, and written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Juno Diablo Cody.

Gleiberman wrote of the monster-themed romantic comedy, “It’s an undead teenage slasher romance that feels like the world’s most needlessly overcomplicated SNL sketch.”

The End, a survival comedy starring Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon, took the fourth position on Gleiberman’s list of worst films, while Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid as President Ronald Regan, took the third position.

“Released just in time to grease the wheels of Trump’s victory, this silly Ronald Reagan biopic was a hit in theaters, for an audience nostalgic for bad TV videos again,” Gleiberman wrote in about the film.

Gleiberman is not the only critic criticizing Reagan. The film also earned a collective “rotten” score of 18% from 68 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but that did not deter audiences from seeing the film.

No. 2 on Variety’s critics list was the groundbreaking satire Rumors, starring Cate Blanchett, while Chris Pine earned the disgraceful distinction of directing the No. 1 worst film on Gleiberman’s list with Poolman.

“Even if you’re a fan of Chris Pine, you may stare slack-jawed at this absurdist disaster of an L.A. noir, which he directed, co-wrote, and stars in,” the critic wrote in Variety.

Variety critic Peter Debruge named the Netflix-produced sci-fi work Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut as his pick for the fifth worst film of 2024.

“Honestly, can you think of anything more gratuitous than a two-part Star Wars knockoff by pop culture remix artist Zack Snyder? How about a gorier (but strangely asexual) six-hour version of that same movie,” Debruge wrote.

No. 4 on Debruge’s list was the big-screen adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s classic children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon, starring Zachary Levi. Meanwhile, writer-director Johnny Mack’s church movie spoof Not Another Church Movie—starring Vivica A. Fox and Mickey Rourke—took the No. 3 spot on the critic’s “worst” list.

Number 2 on Debruge’s list is the Mickey Mouse horror film The Mouse Trap, the newest film to brutally capitalize on a beloved character worthy of being sliced and diced in the public domain like Winnie-the-Pooh .

“The film provides zero scares and countless questions, like why can he teleport, and why would anyone scream after seeing a guy in a Mickey Mouse mask?” Debruge asks in his review.

Number one on Debruge’s list of worst films is writer-director Luc Besson’s crime mystery DogMan, starring Caleb Landry Jones.

“Besson’s third-rate Joker rip-off is ill-conceived on every level — a convoluted act of misplaced empathy in which a police psychologist struggles to tame a deeply traumatized outsider who was literally raised in a doghouse,” Debruge wrote.

While some individual critics named the worst movies of 2024, critic aggregation sites like Metacritic also assembled a list of the worst films cinemas had to offer this past year.

Metacritic’s list included 15 films, high-profile animated films like The Garfield Movie (No. 14) and the disastrous remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgård (No. 13).

Director Eli Roth’s adaptation of the hit video game Borderlands (No. 8) and the failed Marvel movie Madame Web (No. 6), starring Dakota Johnson, made Metacritic’s list of “worst” Array films.

The hard-to-understand sci-fi horror comedy Lumina took the most sensible spot on Metacritic’s list of the worst videos of 2024, which featured only one notable call-out, Eric Roberts, who only made an impression in a cameo.

The film’s Metacritic summary indicated that it is the only film to achieve a single-digit Metascore rating (6 out of 100) for the entire year.

“You can laugh at parts of Lumina—critics did, though they noted the humor was unintentional—but the barely two-hour film is probably too long to justify viewing,” Metacritic’s summary reads in part.
