Twitter boycott: why politicians and celebrities are taking part in a 48-hour social media strike after Wiley’s anti-Semitic tweets

Politicians, celebrities and other prominent figures started a 48-hour boycott of social networking sites Facebook and Twitter this morning.

Both have been heavily criticized for their slow reaction to dirty artist Wiley’s anti-Semitic messages.

Using the hashtag #NoSafeSpaceForJewHate, several high-level Twitter users have announced their support for the boycott of the sites in protest of the company’s handling of the incident.

Interior Minister Priti Patel is among those who criticize silicon valley giants.

She said: “Social media corporations want to act much faster to eliminate this dreadful hatred from their platforms.”

Why do other people boycott social media?

Following Wiley’s posts, they began circulating calls to boycott Twitter and Facebook because of their inaction.

A broad circulation symbol with an emoji with its mouth closed said: Silence speaks. From Monday 27 a.m., leave Twitter for 48 hours to protest your opposition to anti-Jewish racism #NoSafeSpaceForJewHate

Deputy Jess Phillips was among those who tweeted his support for the movement.

She said: “Starting at 9 a.m., I sign up for @Twitter boycott for 48 hours to protest against his inaction in the face of anti-Semitism. This platform has been a haven for hate speech for too long. @Jack will have to act #NoSafeSpaceForJewHate”

What did Wiley say?

Wiley unleashed a wave of abuse on the Jewish network on Friday and Saturday.

Posting to his nearly 500,000 followers, the Jewish rapper to snakes and cowards, while claiming that they were at war with the black community.

He also said they deserved to be shot and claimed they were guilty of the slave trade.

The rapper drew comparisons between the other Jewish people and the KKK, stating: “There are 2 teams of other people that no one sought to challenge #Jewish – #KKK, but who has been in business for 20 years, you start to realize why. The red-necked ones are the KKK and the other Jewish people are the law … Fix.

He also claimed that Jews controlled wealth. An unusual anti-Semitic trope has been to label Jews as greedy and falsely claim that they possess a disproportionate amount of strength and wealth.

At one point, he said, “If he paints for a company owned by two Jewish men and he still defies Jewish net paintings, of course he will be fired.”

How did you punish Wiley?

Twitter deleted some of the rapper’s tweets along with a memo that had damaged his rules, however, some tweets were still visible 12 hours after their publication.

A total of 38 tweets deleted.

They later said Wiley had been banned from the platform for seven days.

Facebook, owner of Instagram, after he had banned the artist from his platform for seven days.

Police are investigating the comments lately.
