YouTube is testing new features for its users, which they call experiences. The newest experimental feature is called Jump Ahead, which uses artificial intelligence to jump to the “best” component of a YouTube video for you.
The new feature works in tandem with the double-tap feature already available in the YouTube app on Android or iOS, which allows you to advance through a video in 10-second increments until you reach the component you’re interested in.
The Jump Ahead feature analyzes the knowledge seen through the user and combines it with on-device learning algorithms to automatically find what it considers to be the next “best” point in a video that the viewer might be interested in. Then, it generates a spark to take it there. Point a Skip Forward button on the screen.
YouTube says the Jump Ahead feature works for creators when they’re watching their own videos, even if they’re not recently subscribed to YouTube Premium. For the rest of us, Jump Ahead is being tested lately with YouTube Premium subscribers in the U. S. and Canada. It was available for testing by a small organization of Premium subscribers. In addition to a YouTube Premium subscription, you also get the Android edition of the YouTube app. Currently, the feature is limited to videos in English, so videos in other languages will not work at this time.
Previously, YouTube included a similar feature in the form of a graphic embedded in a video’s progress bar that shows the “maximum played” portions of that video. Initially, the maximum replay feature was also exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. an option that, if it proves popular and effective, Jump Ahead will become an unlimited access option in the future. It’s unclear when the feature will roll out more widely, however, the experiment is scheduled to end on June 1, so let’s see what YouTube decides to do at that point. Last year, the company also tested, then removed, and then regained the ability to watch any video at twice the speed by long-pressing the video player from the YouTube app.
